An Overview of Texas’s 2025 Elections

The presidential election may be over but there are still hundreds of local races Texans will be voting on across the state in 2025. 

Most Texas municipalities and many school board districts hold their local elections in odd-numbered years. In addition to these local races, Texans will also vote for constitutional amendments to the Texas Constitution. So, here are some of the key dates and details you need to know.

May 3rd Local Elections

Dozens of Texas municipalities will hold their elections on May 3, 2025. All municipal and board elections in Texas are non-partisan. City elections may include the mayor, city council members, and local propositions. Many Independent School Districts (ISDs) will also be voting for board of trustee members.

Key dates

  1. Candidate filing deadline: check with your local clerk’s office! Local election administrators are required to post the filing deadline by Monday, December 16, 2024

  2. Last day to register to vote: Thursday, April 3, 2025

  3. Last day to apply for ballot by mail: Tuesday, April 22, 2025

  4. Election date: Saturday, May 3, 2025

November 4th Constitutional Amendment and Local Elections

In addition to the local elections that will take place on November 4, 2025, constitutional amendments proposed by the Texas Legislature will also be on the ballot. These ballot questions determine whether or not the statewide constitution will be amended and how so. The effects of these changes can ripple across the state and create lasting change.

And remember, your local districts may not be holding elections, but the constitutional amendments can be voted on by ALL eligible voters in Texas! So, these dates apply to everyone.

  1. Filing deadline: check with your local clerk’s office! Local election administrators are required to post the filing deadline by Friday, June 20, 2025

  2. Last day to register to vote: Monday, October 6, 2025

  3. Last day to apply for ballot by mail: Friday, October 24, 2025

  4. Election date: Tuesday, November 4, 2025
