An Overview of New Jersey’s 2025 Elections

New Jersey is one of few states next year that will be holding statewide elections! New Jersey voters will be electing a new governor and lieutenant governor, as well as two assemblypersons per district. The current governor, Phil Murphy, is term-limited and will not be able to seek re-election next year. Some voters can also expect to vote in their municipal elections as well. 

Clearly, it’s a big year for New Jersey! So let’s dig into some of the details.

Election Dates Overview

Here is a concise breakdown of the principal 2025 elections in New Jersey:

  1. Non-partisan municipal elections: May 13, 2025

  2. Primary elections: June 3, 2025

  3. General election: November 4, 2025

May 13th Local  Elections

Key Dates

  1. Filing deadline for candidates: February 2, 2025

  2. Voter registration deadline: April 22, 2025

  3. Early voting period: May 9 - May 11, 2025

  4. Election day: May 13, 2025

What’s On the Ballot?

In Bergen County 

  1. Hackensack (city council, mayor)

  2. Lyndhurst (mayor, township committee members)

June 3rd Primary Elections

Key Dates

  1. Filing deadline: March 24, 2025

  2. Voter registration deadline: May 13, 2025

  3. Early voting period: May 30, 2025 - June 1, 2025

  4. Election day: June 3, 2025

November 4th General Election 

Key Dates

  1. Voter registration deadline: October 14, 2025

  2. Early voting period: October 25, 2025 - November 2, 2025

  3. Election day: November 4, 2025

What’s On the Ballot?

During the June 3rd primary and the November 4 general election, all voters can vote for the following offices: 

  1. Governor

  2. Lieutenant Governor

  3. Assemblyperson (two seats)


In addition to these statewide races, some counties and municipalities will also be holding local primaries and general elections on the same dates. 

Bergen County (three commissioners)

  1. Fort Lee (city council members)

  2. Fair Lawn (mayor, city council members)

  4. Bergenfield (city council members)

  6. Cliffside Park (city council members)

Middlesex County (county commissioners, county clerk, sheriff)

  1. Edison (mayor, city council members)

  2. Woodbridge (township council members)

  3. Old Bridge (township council members)

  4. Monroe (township council members)

  5. Sayreville (borough council members)

  6. North Brunswick (township council members)

  7. Carteret (borough council members)

  8. South Plainfield (borough council members)

Hudson County

  1. Jersey City (mayor, city council members)
